Phil is very much ON this show, propelling the rest of the band along. Scarlet is the opener and they jam it out well, one of the best versions before Fire on the Mountain. The Playin' shows the synchronicity that the band had during this run. It sounds like the product of a single entity. Seastones actually gets pretty interesting once Billy joins on drums, and it turns into an Eyes jam which lasts about 5 minutes before Jerry restates the opening riff and begins the song. Wharf Rat appears after an extended Jam with a strong intro, and very well played in all, one of the better versions from '74. I like this show a lot. Phil is completely on top of things for every song, and the jams are extra sweet. I give a 4 though, because 9/10 is just too amazing the night before. Acid night... This is a six star show for sure. But, that damn aud patch at the end for sunshine daydream and us blues really, really sucks. What a horrible way to end a great show. That patch seriously bums me out. For Scarlet Begonias when Kid was messin with the levels and the last two songs I give -1 stars. So, over all that balances out to a 4. The band could do just about anything at this stage in their careers. The spacey intro to eyes is unreal as the band jams for what seems like forever. The set is a fascinating look at the band as an improvisational unit. We also get the bonus of Ned Lagin joining in on the jams. Why this set didn't make it on the dicks picks from this run of shows is beyond me, as I feel it is one of the most inspiring sets of their career. Listen to the way Ned is dueling with Jerry on Playin'. Also, nice first set, great second set, or at least or pieces of it. I give this a 4 because there's just too much space. There's space in Playin', and it's good. This is followed by a bunch of Phil and Ned, which is not good, which goes into Seastones, also a snooze. Then we get a great Eyes, followed by space. A nice Wharf Rat comes up, then, you guessed it, more space. The Dead is more than space. There's the emotion of Jerry singing and playing on all those Garcia/Hunter songs, dancing and rocking to Bob and Jerry, and the ensemble jamming that noone else can duplicate. This was a great run of shows. I agree with a previous review that the 9/10, the night before, is better, with a fabulous Dark Star->Dew. And it doesn't have Seastones. Can you have too much space? Not my favorite of these shows (I like the night with the Dark Star>Dew better), but it's still great....except, again, for the Seastones. It's just utter garbage. As for the recording, it's a nice one, although I wish they'd used the aud patch for Scarlet on this version.
